Experimenting With Ink...

Remember the forthcoming walking holiday in Italy I've been fretting about?

Well, I like to draw in the airport, to help pass all that really tedious time after check-in. Unfortunately, they don't let me put my craft knife - for sharpening my pencil - in my hand luggage (I once had it confiscated!), which is a bit of a nuisance, as I really hate to draw with a blunt pencil.

So, with that problem in mind, I bought myself a fine-tip, waterproof, felt pen to use instead (I never did get on with the proper cartridge pen I bought before - the waterproof ink just clogged it up).

Having not drawn with a felt nib before, I thought I'd try it out. These are a couple of drawings I did over the Easter weekend. The line is not as sexy as a pencil, but on the whole, I am pretty pleased with the results.

These are really good, I especially like the way you've done the arm chair.
You've never used a felt nip before, and the drawings look this good, tch :)

(I do like the way you make little notes about your sketches on the edges, it's nice to get that little bit of background)

These are wonderful. Great variety of line and I love the reflections on the van. They won't smear in your sketchbook like pencil drawings will.

I really like these - the every day aspect suits the line drawing.

nice!
the felt pen is just a smaller version of the markers you use in your school presentations.

Love these drawings. I enjoy drawing with a 0.1 edding profipen especially when the ink is beginning to dry up as it responds to pressure. Good discipline as no rubbing out possible. I would love to have your sure touch - practice, practice practice.

Thank you so much folks - I'll try the pen more and keep up the experimentation, as it's fun to try new media. Keeps you on your toes too!

I very much enjoy your postings on Urban Sketchers, so came over to see your blog.
I'm responding to your comment about waterproof ink clogging your pen; you might try "Pen & Ink" no shellac India Black fountain pen ink. I believe it is the shellac which clogs pens.

Thanks - I'll try it!
