Children's Books: The Three Bears Come Home

My artwork for Bears on the Stairs came back last week. Another lovely, massive parcel to open!

I may have mentioned this before, but publishers are obliged to return the original drawings: the fee they pay the illustrator doesn't buy the artwork, just the licence to reproduce it as a children's book.

It's always a bit of a worry, whether my stuff will make it home in one piece: the drawings are pretty big (larger than A2) and easy to bend if not packaged properly. So - first prize goes to the wonderful folk at Anderson Press for the bestest packaging from a publisher ever!

As you can see, it was sandwiched between big sheets of stiff card, wrapped in plastic, then sealed in a special cardboard box-thingy, with added side-flaps to keep everything in place and add yet more protection and stiffness. Completely courier-proof - thanks guys!

Bears on the Stairs in due out in August. Can't wait!

In the meantime, if you would like to hear how I designed the book and see my original sketches, check out my July posts (like this).

You can also read my day-by-day progress, as I created the pastel artwork, and see how the coloured images developed, from mid August through September.

I finished the artwork on September 29th and, believe it or not, though that makes it over a year between then and publication day, that's pretty quick. It can easily take another 6 months on top. Patience is a virtue...

Excellent.
I've just been going through your old posts about the progress of creating this which is really interesting.
Thanks in retrospect for posting it all, and thanks for linking again to it for those of us who missed it , too :)

And I just saw your post about getting your new smock, to replace your grandad's old one.
Top stuff, I like smocks, I want to get one.
I do all my work on computer though, so it wouldn't be through neccesity, but I just think they're cool.
"Don't mock the smock or I'll clean your clock"
